Guinness 2010 Update!!!

We would like to extend our appreciation to all of you who have registered for the Guinness event.  Unfortunately, due to too many last-minute registrations, the Guinness World Record Event will be postponed until 2011. We were really hopeful to have the numbers for the event early.  Based on last year's experience, we know we had 912 signed up and put 794 in the water.  That gave us around 13% not showing up for the event.  Let's say we have around 2400 signed up for this year, (registrations are still coming in) and apply the 13% no-show rate, we would still need an additional 312 which would be around 2800 registrants. We also have to factor in the weather... a forecast with thunder and rain could certainly hurt, or even worse, a forecast that is hot and humid, with divers standing around in wet suits.  Last year, this was not a problem because it was nice and cool. We really need at least 3200 divers pre-registered to break the record.

Another reason, to have a representative from Guinness come here requires approximately a six week notice and $2,500.00 USD. It is important to have a Guinness representative because it allows us instant verification of setting the record and we get our certificates the same day.  Otherwise, we have to submit all of our documentation and we are at their mercy.  Having a representative would also make the record official immediately.  We would not have to worry about counting errors.

We have to think about parking, camping, and a large tent for everyone to gather under.  In addition to that, we need chairs, "facilities", and food to accommodate all these people.  Parking and camping accommodations can be met, but we need to have a solid number of registrations (3200 minimum).  For the tent, last year we had a tent large enough for 1000 people.  This year we need a tent 3 times that size (very expensive).  All the more reason why we have to have a solid number of registrations.

We encourage everyone who is already signed up (and anyone who isn't) to attend this weekend, as we are going to discuss how we will achieve those numbers and the logistics for next year.  What does this mean if you signed up?  This year, for everyone that is signed up by noon Saturday, we are going to provide sandwiches, chips, drink, etc. for FREE.  Attendees choosing not to dive will not be charged a non-diver fee for that day. Divers will be charged the normal rate.  All paid registrations will be credited for next year.  We will allow camping in the campgrounds as usual.  We will also have the field east of the parking lot available like last year.  In addition, the field for camping will be laid out and we will have a map of the layout.  You will be able to reserve those spots this weekend (July 16,17, and 18) on a first come first serve basis. We are also going to have the lot used for parking last year available for camping during the 2011 event.

We sincerely apologize for any inconveniece this may have caused. We can prepare for all the obstacles ahead of time if we have people committed to making this event a success. Even if it is too hot next year, we will have fans, sprinklers, ect., but we have to have time to prepare. THE INTEREST IS HUGE compared to last year, so we have to work as a team and get signed up early. We look forward to seeing you and hearing your thoughts.

Look what's new . . . we no longer charge for parking!!

Gilboa Quarry is a 14+ acre limestone quarry, located in Northwest Ohio. There are wooded campgrounds encompassing over half the quarry's perimeter. Gilboa Quarry is a great location for diving and dive training. The quarry provides two distinct personalities: the shallow side at 5 - 65 ft provides great recreational enjoyment, while the deep side of the quarry with depths of 130 plus ft is suitable for technical training.
Gilboa Quarry

There are a multitude of items of interest for all divers. Whether it is our large training platforms, 15 - 130 plus ft depths, or our many sunken treasures such as the Grumman airplane and Sikorsky helicopter, there is certain to be something of interest for everyone.

Platforms

Gilboa Quarry is a dive instructor's paradise. On the shallow side of the quarry suspended just 20 ft from the surface and 10 ft from the bottom are 90 ft of instructor's platforms. These platforms consist of 6 individual 10' x 20' suspended staging areas ideal for taking students safely through there open water checkout. Since several classes can be given at one time, there is no waiting. This, along with the great visibility, offers the student and instructor the perfect environment to perform everything from mask clearing to buddy breathing.
